DESCRIPTION:Living History Sunday April 30th @ 2 pm: Father James Wilbur\, Methodist missionary\, church builder\, & Indian agent played by Chuck Hindman Rev. James H. "Father" Wilbur arrived in Oregon Territory in 1847 after a 9 month journey around the horn. He served as principal of the Oregon Institute in Salem (which is now Willamette University) and founded the first Protestant church in Portland before becoming presiding elder of the Columbia River district. As such\, he visited Walla Walla in 1858 and worked with the founding pastor for First Methodist Episcopal Church in Walla Walla (later to become Pioneer United Methodist)\, the first Protestant church east of the Cascades. That same year\, he visited Ft. Simcoe and was asked to found a school on the Yakima Reservation\, which he did with his wife the next year. He continued as a prominent leader of early Methodism and accepted a request from President Lincoln to also serve as Indian agent on the Yakima Reservation. At age 70\, he retired to Walla Walla and partnered with a real estate developer while still preaching from time to time. Wilbur Avenue is part of his legacy. Fort Walla Walla Museum is on Myra Road in Fort Walla Walla Park. Museum hours are 10 am   5 pm daily\, March through October\, and 10 am   4 pm\, November 1 through the end of February. Admission is free to members and children under 6\, $3 for children ages 6-12\, $7 for seniors 62 and older and students\, and $8 general admission.
