SUMMARY:Sacred Cows
DESCRIPTION:Would you believe that cattle could be the key to improving soil health\, maintaining healthy rivers\, and combating climate change?\n\n\n\nA 2013 TEDTalk by biologist Allan Savory brought this idea to the mainstream\, and thousands of ranchers around the world now follow the practices he recommends. Known as holistic pasture management\, it attempts to manage grazing to emulate the ecological role of grazing animals that evolved in the world's grasslands.\n\n\n\nTony and Andrea Malmberg have been practicing holistic pasture management on their rangeland in Elgin for five years. Andrea is also the Director of Research and Knowledge Management for the Savory Institute. In that time\, they have seen improvements in soil health\, weed control\, wildlife habitat\, and the land's carrying capacity resulting from their management of the cattle on their property. Robert and Cheryl Cosner have also used holistic pasture management on their Weston property to make it thrive.\n\n\n\nOur 2015 film festival featured "Soil Carbon Cowboys." We're thrilled to see these ideas put to work in our own backyard!\n\n\n\nJoin us as the Malmbergs and Cosners discuss holistic management on their land and share how it has benefited their land and our environment.\n\n\n\nWe will meet in Whitman College's Hunter Conservatory. Bus transportation to and from the Cosner ranch in Weston will be provided.
