In this first of two field workshops, co-sponsored by a grant from The Washington Native Plant Society, we will facilitate a more “close-up” look at the amazing native plant diversity of the Blue Mountains. Participants will become familiar with the tools and resources needed to recognize and identify the flowers, other plants and lichens they will encounter while on their own future mountain ramblings. We will visit a variety of wild flowers, shrubs and trees, and introduce some simple botanical terminology that will aid in identification. We’ll discuss how plants occur in eco-regions and “communities,” some historical native plant uses, modern plant classifications, and much, much more. This time of year, the Camas meadows should be in full bloom. Our hosts Jeff Fredson and Cheryl Baker are passionate advocates for our native plants, birds, wildlife and forests. Jeff has sustainably managed his property on Weston Mountain, OR since 1992.
