Woodward Canyon, or “Woody,” as it is affectionately nicknamed, is one of the earliest wineries in the Walla Walla Valley. Rick Small and his wife, Darcey Fugman-Small, have been producing premium reds and whites since 1981 at their location in Lowden. The Smalls are leaders in sustainable wine making. “Fundamentally, we’re harvesting an agricultural product, and with that comes a certain responsibility to the land from which the fruit comes and to the community in which it is grown. It means we are actively interested in the well-being of our employees and of our community,” said Darcey, the winery’s general manager.
