The Big Apple
Washington is known worldwide for its apples, but did you know that the largest contiguous orchard in the United States is located right here in Walla Walla County?
Broetje Orchards has over 4,300 acres stretching nearly 10 miles along the Snake River northwest of Eureka. We will tour the orchard and learn about the planting, growing, and harvesting of the fruit. We'll also see their storage facility that can hold over 500 million apples, and the packing lines that grade, sort, and package the fruit. The Broetje operation is unique in the apple industry in that the fruit is grown, stored, and packed at the same location, then shipped all over the world.
Following a nearly life-long dream of owning an orchard and helping children, Ralph and Cheryl Broetje have built a community as well as a business. To provide safe, affordable housing for its workers, Broetje built a community adjacent to their orchards named ?Vista Hermosa,? or ?beautiful view.? They provide recreational opportunities for families, medical care and educational programs for children, youth and adults, and promote leadership among their workers.
Broetje Orchards has received numerous awards for environmental excellence, community philanthropy and social outreach, promoting agriculture, and providing a high quality of life for their employees.
This event is made possible by the generous support of Nelson Irrigation.
