Wine Immersion Series in Northern Italy - Liguria Wine Region
Coming up on Saturday, March 2, 2024, everything you wanted to know about Italian Wines, with Pendleton's Professional Sommelier, Steve Machajewski. Tonight's wine class is focused on The Liguria Region, located in the northwest region of Italy running along a thin 150 mile crescent coastal-shaped region of the Mediterranean Sea called the Italian Riviera.
This famous wine region represents several Denominazione di origine controllata regions with the most notable being the Cinque Terre DOC from cliff side vineyards situated among the five fishing villages of Cinque Terre in the province of La Spezia. The DOC produces light white wines made from grape varieties such as Bosco, Albarola and Vermentino. In the west is the red wine-producing region of Dolceacqua, producing wine from the indigenous Rossese grape.
Viticulture in the Liguria wine region accounts for around 25 centuries and is characterized by scattered, heroically grown vineyards on the stiff cliffs and wherever nature permitted. In Liguria, from Ventimiglia on the French border to La Spezia, which borders the Tuscany region, there are no fewer than 600 wineries.
